The competition name is... Real Salt Lake, Colorado Rapids Fans Announce Name of Yearly Competition
Rocky Mountain Cup will award trophy to winner of 4-game series SPORTS: MAJOR LEAGUE SOCCER For Immediate Release =============================== PRESS RELEASE For More Information, Please Contact: William Fisher Committee of 10 (C10) RealRapidsCup.com press [at] realrapidscup.com Salt Lake City, UT & Denver, CO March 3, 2005 — Over 500 soccer enthusiasts voted during the past 10 days to determine the name of the annual competition between Major League Soccer’s Colorado Rapids and Real Salt Lake. Voters going to RealRapidsCup.com were presented with competition name choices after the fan-based Committee of 10 (C10) sifted through dozens of supporter suggestions for the competition title. The overwhelming favorite and winner, tallying twice as many votes as the nearest rival, is Rocky Mountain Cup. First announced in January 2005, the supporters-driven C10 is already garnering great fan interest, as well as being endorsed by both MLS soccer clubs and local politicians as well. Fans of both teams turned out in almost equal numbers to vote on the competition name. “To have more than 500 votes cast in a one-week period is really amazing,” said Jason Maxwell, chairman of C10. “So many voters during the off-season shows that people are already excited about this competition. A good number of the voters were fans of other teams as well, which shows that this rivalry is generating interest all through Major League Soccer, not just in Denver or Salt Lake.” “This rivalry is very natural to the fans of Real Salt Lake,” said Juliana Montgomery, RSL supporter and member of C10. “It was discussed from day one and the fans have loved hating each other ever since. We are already very competitive about everything concerning Salt Lake and Denver, from the preseason draft to politics to snow totals.” “The Rocky Mountain Cup reflects everything we are forced to live with: each other,” said William Fisher, a Rapids supporter. “It doesn't just make sense regionally. As everyone worldwide knows, Colorado reigns supreme among the Rockies, and the Rapids will reign supreme over Real Salt Lake!" The Rocky Mountain Cup will be awarded to the winner of the teams’ four-game regular-season series. Other elements of the competition will include joint sponsorship and ticket initiatives coordinated by the Rapids and Real Salt Lake. Complete competition rules are available at RealRapidsCup.com C10 has also announced its intention to host a fundraising effort for the competition Trophy. The committee is working out details for an online auction of signed team gear and memorabilia for fans of the clubs. The Rocky Mountain Cup is an effort by fans to promote the already healthy, competitive spirit among supporters of the two top soccer teams in the region. As part of that effort, C10 will also work with supporters and both teams to coordinate road trips and other events surrounding the competition. RealRapidsCup.com is the organizing website run by C10 (the Committee of 10), is a fan-based supporters organization dedicated to the intra-league rivalry between Real Salt Lake and the Colorado Rapids Major League Soccer clubs, in partnership with both teams. Great! Thanks. I voted for RMC, but I thought all the possibilities were good.
And thanks again the the Committee of 10 for spearheading this. What's next? Will we determine what kind of trophy we have? Or is that up to C10? I guess if it's the Rocky Mountain Cup, it would make sense for the trophy to be a . . . cup.

Ha! Jules got quoted!
I like "Rocky Mountain", but not "Cup" so much. There are just so many cups already. That's ok, though. I guess the important part isn't really the name, it's the fact that the Rapids suck.

Good job Jules. The next step is for the C10 to decide on a design, yes.

Rocky Mountain Cup! I see I was beaten to the punch here. 😉
The committee would like to allow a vote on the trophy design, but we don't know if that's feasable or not, depending on time frame and what we have to work with. We'll be happy to take any suggestions you may have though, just email them to us through the website. The next big thing out of C10 will probably be an auction of autographed material. We've already gotten the full support of the Rapids and we're talking with RSL right now, to donate autographed jerseys, ticket packages, balls, etc. to auction off to raise funds for the trophy and other expenses. We're also considering organizing a road trip to the game on April 16th, but that's still in the early stages of discussion, and with it being RSL's first home game we're not sure if we want to crash the party and/or deal with trying to get tickets. I'm sure you'll see road trips planned for the other 3 games of the series this season though. Last edited by JasonMa : 03-04-2005 at 12:26 PM. Reason: Duplicate post
