What Europe is saying about LD

It took me a while to come to terms with the truth, which is that I am a Landon Donovan fan.

Being inspired by Jake's thread on the Champions League I set out to be informed about the next leg of matches coming in a week. While on the UEFA site I found this article about Landon. It's nice to see what the european press has to say about american players.

Amazing how the Leverkusen attack is energized when he has come in for the last 2 games against Liverpool, and Stuttgart (I think?)

You're right, it was VfB Stuttgart, although the game ended 1-1.

It is an interesting article. Even so, I laugh whenever a Euro makes a crack about our use of the term "soccer." The English invented the word--we borrowed it, just like we've borrowed the game. And we're not the only ones to use it. You'll hear it in Canada, New Zealand, Australia, even South Africa and, yes, England. Basically, anywhere one of the other five football codes is played in addition to soccer.

OK, for the unitiated, the six codes are: soccer, rugby league, rugby union, aussie rules, gridiron (American and Canadian), and gaelic football. ALL of them started from the same game, and ALL of them are football.

But I digress. I guess I've never had a problem rooting for Landon (even when he was a smurf), maybe because he's a Redlands boy from the Inland Empire in SoCal. The IE gets dumped on all the time, but they're good people out there and it's great to see one of them succeed.

I personally think LD could do well in La Liga or even Serie A, but for now the Bundesliga will do. It will certainly toughen him to play in colder weather and against the very physical style they use in Germany.

And I do think Leverkusen has a chance against Liverpool, but they'll have to get an early goal to build momentum. Picking up the away goal in Anfield was huge. We'll see.

I think you are right. LD would be best suited in Serie A in my opinion, but La Liga would be up his alley as well. I'd love to see Donovan in a Roma uniform!

I always liked Landon too, even as a smurf. He's a fun player to watch and he doesn't act like an idiot.
