"aggregate: A total considered with reference to its constituent parts; a gross amount" When teams play a "home and away" like in Champions League, the winner is determined by the aggregate goal count of the two games. For example when Chelsea and Barca played the first game, the score was 1-2 and the second game was 4-2, then the aggregate score is 5-4 (the sum of scores from the two matches). In case of a tie, I believe the tie-break is most goals scored on the road in the case of Champions league. So, in the above example, if Barca had lost the second game 4-3, the aggregate would've been tied but they would've won the tie-break because they scored 3 goals on the road versus Chelsea's 1.

Aero, I can't tell you how many times (including yesterday) I have had to explain aggregate score to my wife. No worries, we all have to start somewhere.
Aggregate means that you take all the goals in all the matches in a series. For example the score for Chelsea vs Barc in Leg 1 was 1-2. Yesterday in Leg 2 Barc had 2 to Chelsea's 4, so you add up all the goals and thats your aggregate score, Chelsea 5 Barcelona 4. However, in many soccer competitions there is another layer of math. Away goals. Away goals have more weight then home goals. So even though at one point Chelsea was winning yesterday 3-2. they were actually losing since the total aggregate score was 4-4 with Barcelona having scored 2 goals away to Chelsea scoring only 1 away goal, thus in a 4-4 tie, Barc had the tiebreaker. Understand? :D

It means "combined". In a home and away series, whoever has the highest goal total wins. The tiebreaker is "Away goals". For example, Barcelona beat Chelsea 2-1 at Barcelona. After Chelsea scored the first goal in the second match and were up 1-0 in that match, the aggregate score was 2-2, and Chelsea had the tiebreaker. When they were up 3-2, the aggregate score was 4-4, and Barcelona had the tiebreaker, having scored more total goals in their away match to that point. Unfortunately, Chelsea scored again to make it 5-4 aggregate.

Thanks everyone. I actually knew about the concept but had forgotten that aggragate was the term used to describe it. I should have figured that out for myself.

Donovan is in the starting lineup for Leverkusen. He is playing just behind the two strikers. Should be an exciting match for him!
Beasley is on the bench for PSV.

Can Liverpool hang on?
Can Arsenal come back from a 2-goal deficit? Can Juve overcome Real’s first leg goal? Can Saviola turn around Monaco’s fate? Riveting stuff. Intriguing match ups.
