In fact, it's time for some serious clarification on the proper use of the word conserative. Althought this is a republican dominated state, somehow the people here (in ignorant bliss) have failed to understand that being politically conservative is not the same as being morally conservative.

If this were a truly conservative state, we would have a lottery and other revenue mechanisms, that while perhaps not morally acceptable by the religous right, would allow us to pay less "inherently evil" tax. This is the ONLY state in the union, the ONLY one, that allows not a single form of legalized gambling. Political conservatism? Yeah right.

Idaho is a conservative state. Oh yeah....they have lotteries and indian casinos to suck millions of dollars out of our economy and into theirs day-by-day. So although they also have a large population affiliated with the religious (freaks....er...) right, they haven't clouded their judgement away from political conservatism.

We are taxed up the a**, and the control of the religiously conservative hiding behind a screen of political conservatism is what is really "inherently evil." And for you to buy into it and actually profess we live in a conservative state and therefore feel all tax is "inherently evil" is ridiculous.
your wrong. utah is one of the states that has relatively good taxes. a lower state tax, lower income and federal taxes and so on. a low hotel tax, low sales tax. your actually lucky. after living there for 20 years and now living in oregon i envy the tax situation in utah. oregon has REALLY high income tax, HIGH property tax, high gas taxes, and a miriad of other rediculously high taxes that i have to pay for for some reason. the one good thing that oregon does have is NO sales tax. thats one key for the other higher taxes, but it even outs in the end. we have a terrible infrastructure with poor roads, poor education, high homeless and poverty rates not to mention some pretty high crime rates. people in oregon value a different way of life and we do have some pretty good healthcare, better than utah's.

but to say that utahs taxes are outrageous, is outrageous.

Thanks for that web page Ska.....I'm glad I haven't been smoking crack wondering why we pay every form of tax available to man. (Well....i'm glad my crack smoking didn't affect my judgement anyway.)

I want to know what study can possibly show Utah as 34th in the nation in tax burden when we have income tax, property tax, sales tax (including sales tax on food), while having zero alternative high revenue producers such as gambling, toll lanes (don't even try to count this 600 HOV pass bull****), etc. Oh, I'm sorry, we do sell vanity plates and hunting/fishing licenses. Whoopie.

This state raises money one way, and that's through involuntary taxation.

I wasn't sure where to put this. But I'm in Arkansas right now and they are willing to fully fund a $50 million baseball stadium just to attempt to lure a AA baseball team from Witchita, that may or may not be moving. As far as I can tell, there is no private funding for this project.

Oh and the AA team they want, is a Royals farm team. I just thought it was interesting to see the differences. Here in AR, they are willing to pony up for an entire project just for the opportunity to get a AA baseball team. And SLC was piddly-footing around on a $500 million private investment.

want more links?
taxes in Uah

Sometimes I'm glad I have a minor in Political Science, basically, manipulate the raw data any way you want, but trying to say things like Utah has a lower gas tax is plain wrong. Utah has the highest fuel tax rate of any state west of the Mississippi at 24.5 cents per gallon. Oregon is at 24. California is at 22. That gets passed on to consumers in everything we buy that gets transported. Our taxes in Utah are like that, not very visual, but very high.

Lotteries are taxes in disguise. Most people don't look at lotteries as "taxes". However, they are usually a state sponsored way to produce revenue. Yeah, participating in a lottery may be voluntary, but the taxes you are charged when you purchase a lottery ticket are not. And, the rate you are charged is extremely high, much higher than any state sales tax. The state will get their money one way or another, involuntarily or voluntary.

If you want some reading material to explain this argument, look at this site.

Very simply, lotteries are a tax on people who are bad at mathematics. Still, given I'm traveling to Lava Hot Springs this weekend, I'll probably give into temptation and buy a powerball ticket or two at the store because you just never know. But after the winning numbers come out in a few days and I don't hit anything, I'll likely wish I'd bought another bag of chips or 6 packs instead of the lottery tix.
