Transfer question Can anyone explain the transfer system to me in Europe. Like Carrick on Tottenham. Or at least he was. He was transferred this week for $24M to ManU. Does he get the money or does Tottenham? Do teams trade players for money instead of other players? Does he renegotiate his contract?

the teams use transfer fees to buy other players or invest somewhere else in the team. The player renegotiates his contract when he is transfered... I don't know if they trade player for player... I would think that it rarely happens if at all... but not sure.

More often a team will 'loan' a player out to another team. Sometimes so that the player in question gets some competitive playing time, sometimes to lessen the wage burden a team is paying, but sometimes also for other sorts of considerations that may or may not be directly roster related. Often this is too the great advantage of team and player in the long run (I'm thinking of Jermain Defoe).
