You don’t have to go back very far in the record books to find a rivalry between Italy and France. The two teams met in the quarterfinals of the 1998 World Cup with France ousting the Azzurri in a penalty shoot out. The two countries met again in the final of Euro 2000 and it was Les Bleus who once again came out on top. Regardless of who you are supporting in Sunday’s match, let’s hope this final turns out to be as exciting as that game.

Video highlights of the Euro 2000 France/Italy match.

It was a good game. France looked like they could win it as the game wound down but didn't pull it off. And then ZiZou pulled off the above stunt. So it goes.

Italy wins on PKs

I was pulling for France. I wanted Zidane to go out on top. After the dive in the box that put France up 1-0, I was pissed and thought maybe I should support Italy. Then, after Zidane's stunt , I fully switched sides. Go Italy. Although, the hooligan in me thinks that head-butt to the chest was one of the coolest non-lethal takedowns I have ever seen.

In summary: one of the most anti-climactic finals ever. A dive earns France a PK which goes in with a wimper and doesn't ever make it to the net. Then Italy scores on a corner. No goals earned during the run of play. In the climax of Zidane's career, he goes out with a red card. All penalty shootouts are lame, but this one ends without a single save being made. Zidane, Henry, Viera, and Ribery are all unavailable for the shootout and France looses because their naturalized Argentine hits the cross bar. Then Zidane doesn't even come out of the locker room to accept his silver medal. The best part of the final was seeing Gatusso, "The Snarling Dog", take his pants off and slide on his belly across the pitch in his tighty-whities.

Not bittersweet for AS Roma fans, I knew Juve and the others had been cheating for years! Italy wins the World Cup and the next day has its league cleaned up, it's the best two days for Italian Calcio in a long time

Forza Italia

Forza Roma

Fun game, weird ending, but great for Italy. Can't wait for USA in 2010!
