I might be wrong but didn't they renounce the Book of Mormon as holy scripture and now refer to it only as an historical account. I believe this was a condition of them joining the World Council of Christian Churches.

I had a great tour around the temple lot in Missouri met some really nice people there, wonderful visit.

My bad. Forgot about Arelius' post discussing this.

To clarify: I wasn't trying to target or call out anybody specific in my post above. Just frustrated by the situation in general and the thread here got the brunt of it.

You are wrong. From their webpage:

What do you use for scriptures?

Community of Christ recognizes three books of scripture: The Holy Bible, the Book of Mormon, and the Doctrine and Covenants. We believe in continuing revelation and an open canon of scripture.

That is a common misconception among LDS though. I believe it stems from the fact that their (CoC) general conferences work differently than ours (LDS). In their general conferences representatives from each congregation are sent to the meeting, and anyone can propose anything they want and it gets considered and voted on. There is a particular member that every time tries to get the Church to disavow the Book of Mormon and D&C and this is always strongly voted down. However, this is often reported as "Community of Christ considers disavowing the Book of Mormon". The truth is though, if someone wanted to propose that the Community of Christ turn into sharks with wings and fly to Mars it would get considered and voted upon.

In any case, they now renounce polygamy, although that seems a little odd since their church was born out of the ashes of the Strangite movement which did practice polygamy (and of course the Strangites were born out of the ashes of Nauvoo where polygamy was practised as well). But they say it is no different than modern Christians rejecting Old Testament polygamy.

That's interesting. makes sense too. I had a great discussion with a guy at the temple lot, he was pretty cool, very dedicated. I bet you know, but I vaguely remember him saying that they didn't have a lot of members anymore, it was either 100,000 or something like 11,000, can't remember which.

thansk for the info, I'm always fascinated by this kind of stuff.

I have heard 250,000 recently, which is actually a dip in numbers since a few years ago because there have been a couple of break-off movements. There are places in the Pacific where it is one of the larger churches. Until the late 1980s there were still states in the US where non-LDS mormons (mostly the then RLDS and Strangites) out-numbered LDS. Where I grew up, Wisconsin, the term Mormon brought up in most people's minds the Strangites and the RLDS, and when I became LDS people would sometimes ask me why I was a member of the Utah Mormons when there were good Wisconsin Mormon Churches to belong to.

If you are really interested I can tell you about the times I have spoken in CoC and Strangite sacrament services.
