This is what is amazing about soccer. I hate baseball. I hate baseball. I hate baseball, yet I don't feel the incessent need to claim my hate of baseball every year. I can appreciate it but also find it to be the dullest sport on earth.

why is it you bring up soccer and someone (who has no mind for themselves because Jim Rome is running it) has to yell, scream from the rooftops their hatered for the sport? I can't understand that.

What?!?!? WHAT!?!?! This is scary, he probably hasn't ever seen an MLS game. MLS has tons of talent and tons of potential.

He wouldn't know if there was talent anyhow. You can't be that ignorant of a sport and complain that there isn't enough talent on the field.

Yes let's blast some idiot journalism major who writes drivel for a college newspaper and wrote this with the single intent of getting a rise out of people. The more indignation you can muster the better. That won't make soccer fans look stupid to a guy who doesn't care anyway.

I completly agree if we completely ignor the fact that soccer haters exist, they will go away. I mean come on, its our fault they exist. Deep down inside, they love soccer, but just write stuff like this to get a rise out of people. :slobber:

Now for something less sarcastic...

I have worked in the media... (incliuding the student rag this kid writes for) and you would be suprised at what a respectful letter writing campain can do. Especially at this particular paper. Odds are that the people in charge didn't know this was going out until it already had. And odds are he will get a good long one-on-one session about what editorial writing is about and what is and is not appropriate. Will this result in a retraction... no. But, this kid not only doesn't like soccer, but abused the trust he was given and did something that goes against the general operating procedure for the publication that he represents.

That said, I see absolutly nothing wrong with sending him and the paper letters stating that we feel he is not only in the wrong, but crossed a line.

Hey Dysko
I saw some kid wearing a "soccer sucks" Tshirt walking towards Orem Jr. high the other day. You should probably call the principal so we can stomp out this hate. I'm pretty sure more people read this kid's Tshirt than that article in the Daily Universe.

Shame on the BYU newspaper (generally a pretty lousy student newspaper anyways) for printing this. Not just because this socially-retarded, pimple-faced, dead-eyed, slack-jawed, self-loathing (boo-hoo, girls don't like me because I didn't serve a mission, or if I did it wasn't a cool international one) yokel from MO is using their pages to publicly display his idiocy. Does this paper have an editor?

Does the paper have a fact checker?

Soccer brings so much peace that riots occur after almost every game with inevitable serious injuries or even deaths. Moreover, while racism abounds in every sport, soccer takes the cake by far. European soccer fans throw bananas at black soccer players and yell ethnic slurs."
You have GOT to be kidding me!

I am an American first and a soccer hater second.
Actually, I can think of three or four things that this guy is long before an American.

However, this little wimp can think whatever he wants, and if there is a paper dumb enough to print it, more power to him. As a graduate and frequent employee of that school I will say that I am very embarrassed that he holds such ridiculous, jingoistic views. I won't write to him or the paper, but you can bet that when the BYU foundation asks me about my donations to the school and why they are suddenly much smaller I will just answer "Michael Barzee" and that my charitible higher educational dollars are going elsewhere (and this is fair too, since the Daily Universe is the official BYU paper!)

I certainly do not mind a strong editorial point of view, or a rhetorical point. However, to do that well the piece needs to be well written (according to the standards of journalism and literary practice) and factual. This piece is neither.

I'm not going to call Michael Barzee at his home phone # of 801-380-6650, but if anyone else does please ask him how closely related he is to Wanda Barzee, the paranoid, dillusional, and probably schizo woman involved in kidnapping Elizabeth Smart.

Idiot.

Don't forget that TWO COMPLETE soccer matches could have been completed in the time it took to get through that one game...

So... what you're saying is that I'm cool because I went on one of those international missions? Sweet!!!

😁
