I played in a game where the keeper scored an own goal on himself (freak wind gust aided)... it was one of the funniest things I ever saw. The other team was arguing that it shouldn't be a goal. The official was a bit confused by the whole thing, but my team went on to win that game by...you guessed it...1 goal.

Oh my, I would've been laughing at that one too. I feel a bit bad for the guy. But if I were the ref, well, I'm not sure how forgiving I would be to the clearly unfounded arguments that it couldn't be a goal.

In the end the own goal was the difference... but as any player will tell you. You take wins anyway you get them.

It occured when the keeper punted the ball. The ball traveled about 15 yards forward before the wind caught it and took the ball nearly 20 yrds up and it dropped slowly as it came backward. It dropped just under the cross bar. The rule to which you are refering is what the other team was arguing should also be applied in this situation. The ref was unsure what to do, so he sent one of the linesmen to get the tournament director of officials and check how he should rule. The head official said the goal should stand... luckily the refs decision to not decide only delayed the game by about 5 minutes. This was in the semi-finals of the tourney, so he (the ref) didn't want to screw up and cost one team a trip to the finals. Anyway you cut it, it has to be one of the funniest things I have ever seen happen in a sporting event. __________________ Hurt in a Car Wreck call Robert J.
