Computer guru needed...HELP

Ok, Im stupid sometimes. I just need someone to tell me how to set up a password for my wireless connection so my whole neighborhood will not get on my signal. Can anyone help? Also, is there a way I can see if other people are doing exactly that?

THANKS

I'd think you should ask your provider. They certainly don't want users who aren't paying them using the connection.

I think a lot of this goes on. My step-son bought himself a laptop a few months ago and had a wireless installed so he could use the network at his work. When he turned it on at home, he immediately noticed a network connection in the taskbar (apparently from someone in the neighborhood) and found he could use it as it wasn't coded. Must have been detected because a few days later, he found it wouldn't let him on anymore.

Gotta set your WEP key or tell your router to only accept certain MAC addresses (like yours). I'm not exactly sure how to do this, of course... 🙂

the instruction manual that came with your wireless jobber should explain very clearly how to do this. Probably give you an IP address to go to and log in to a web based interface for the acess point. Turn on WEP and give it a key that you must also give to every machine you want to be able to use the wireless connection. You might want to set it to not broadcast the SID as well. Like I say the instruction manual should give very clear instructions.

What software provides printed manuals now days? Whether it's a game, word processor, operating system, hardware, etc., manuals are a thing of the past. Hope you get this solved. Sort of a downer to pay lots of money to get a fast wireless connection (wish I could afford one) and have people essentially stealing it from you and slowing you down.

Isn't it usually like 192.168.something to access your local thingee?

Okay, I have no idea. rslfutbolfan, give us the make model and year (jk) of your wireless thingee and we'll try to find you an online manual with instructions. My husband and I have had to look up stuff like that online lots of times...
