Aww man. I took a good three minutes writing a pro-soccer response to that, and then I had to create a new user account which then directed me to some blank page and I ended up losing the whole stinking thing I'd typed. Oh well. Go Real.

I had the same happen. They don't have the most user friendly message board in place.

I don't mind the referendum as long as it's done along with setting out some clear guidelines / laws on when referendums can be used.

Question - Did anyone object this much with the city coughed up $20m for infrastructure improvements for The Gateway?

that entire thread of posts is pointless. they're pretty uneducated about the issue and it's frustrating to read their posts.

reprsentative government people. you voted for the stadium when you voted for your representative. You will get your chance to vote for the stadium when you vote this coming november. It's not that difficult. it's part of Utah's constitution.

After reading that, I had an epiphany.

If you're too stupid to be unable to construct an actual sentence -- with correct spelling and everything -- you're too stupid to be allowed to vote.

Seriously.

I thought "Christopher E." made some good points.

There needs to be clearly defined rules regarding this to ensure fair and equal treatment.

That said, there are many mispercetptions floating around out there. Larry did get a good chunk of public money for the public eyesoar that we know as the Delta Center. And that's not unique to the domain of sports teams. IIRC the city spend $20m on the Gateway project for public infrastructure improvements.

Really, we need to ask ourselves why the politicians are calling for the referndum in the first place? If the proposal is a bad idea, why can't they simply vote it down? Afterall, that's what they were elected for.
I could kiss you!

Well, that's why we elect representatives for these things. They can take more time to look into the issue and weigh it's pluses and minuses. It doesn't bother me that people don't want the stadium. But what does bother me is when it's oversimplified. Especially when it comes down to things like government money being used. I'm not sure many people conciously realize that it's used for all sorts of projects whether it's The Gateway ($15-18m) or the Micron/Intel venture IM Flash getting $15m from the state for building at the old Micron plant in Lehi. And I don't want to say that since everyone else is jumping off the bridge, it should be repeated. But I have a feeling the infrastructure improvements for the new RSL stadium are not only needed but will go to benefit the expo center too. And afterall, that is one of the facilities driving the upswing hotel and rental car revenues.

And I want to thank Fuegote for exercising restraint and not kissing me (yet). 😁

I don't think half those people could even spell the word "representative".
