Good hell.

So Houston has already managed to alienate one of its primary markets? I didn't realize that '1836' had so much baggage (I thought it was a fine nickname) but maybe AEG should have done a little more homework on this one. Really, I can't blame Mexican-Americans for not wanting to wear shirts featuring the year '1836.' That year may have significance for Houstonians, but the surrounding history may not be so easily reconciled for Mexican-Americans in that city, coincidence or not.

I think that MLS, in courting the ethnic fan, needs to realize that you can't please all the people all of the time. The league keeps finding itself in hot water over silly stuff like this. My solution: political correctness be damned. I think it's a great name. Give it a chance. Then again, I'm a Redskins fan. I guess I like nicknames with an edge.

Either that, or change the name to Houston 2006.

The whole idea that people living in Houston are going to be mad because the local soccer team is named after the year the city was founded is ludicrous. If they are so offended by it, why are they even living in the city in the first place? They don't mind taking advantage of the fact that Houston is in the USA, but don't want to be reminded that the USA took it from Mexico? Seems a bit hypocritical to me.

It's just people complaining because they like to complain and because they live in a country that actually allows them to do so. No matter what the team had been named, someone would have complained about it.

My Mexican history is a little rusty, but I don't think the two scenarios are exactly the same, are they?

And considering the number of people who are STILL complaining about RSL's name, I don't think that pointing out a little cultural inconsistency is exactly "whining".

Just saying. 🙂

Damn you philly! <spitting sound> My English blood boils!

but then my american blood beats it into submission.

La gente mexicana have about 3 independence days and they are major holidays. I loved STexas for that very reason. I don't think the people are particularly happy in a name celebrating when they lost a battle.

but it is almost 200 years later.... and aren't we all americans.

1836 didn't involve the United States. That was Texas' war for independence that actually included many Hispanic Texicans fighting against Santa Ana's Mexico. The Mexican War (President Polk's great land grab) didn't happen until the 1840s, ironically at the same time as the initial Mormon migration to Utah.

Apologies for waking up the social studies teacher.

Well, in both cases the rebels took the land they lived on (land claimed by either the British or Mexican government) and made their own nation - much to the ire of the former governing bodies. Both were done by force. I feel they are somewhat similar.
