Swedish and Saudi female fans will be allowed into the stadium, where they will be seated in a separate section and will not be allowed to mingle with the male crowd

The move followed the intervention of Swedish diplomats in Riyadh when the authorities in the ultraconservative Muslim Kingdom had told the Swedish Football Association that an unexplained change of stadium meant women could not watch the international.

Women in Saudi Arabia must be covered from head to toe in public and are segregated from men. Any large gathering of people including football spectators, is restricted to men unless there is separate accommodation for women, who are usually kept out of men's sight.

Women have traditionally played a very limited role in public life, may not vote, and are not allowed to drive.
