There's probably more to say but its all eulogy. What a tragic figure.

Can't fault your eloquence and there's no doubt of Maradona's talent, charisma, and iconic cultural status in Argentina. And he did play for Barca, so he rates a little more than most.

But I draw the line at calling him a tragic figure. Roberto Clemente was a tragic figure. Matt Busby and ManU in the Munich Air Disaster of 1958 were tragic figures. Maradona's downfall has been . . . Maradona. Call me harsh, but I have no sympathy for drug abusers.

The contrast with Pele, or Cruyff, or even Beckenbauer is telling. I know many love the drama of it all, but I can muster no pity for a man who wasted the greatness that comes only to a few. He has let his country, his sport, and himself down. I wish him no harm and hope he is redeemable. So far, the signs are not good.

As for Argentina, they have plenty of talent to put on the field and they'll be just fine. The soccer team, I mean. The country has a ways to go.
