Simon Elliott to Fulham

Fulham manager Chris Coleman is allegedly hot to trot for Columbus Crew midfielder, and New Zealand international, Simon Elliott come January. From a purely numbers standpoint the Kiwi forged a quietly successful career in MLS, first with the Los Angeles Galaxy and most recently with the Crew. With the exception of the 2003 campaign when he had just two assists, Elliott served up an impressive 42 assists in 106 appearances in four of his last five seasons.

But from this MLS fan’s perspective, Fulham could find at least a dozen players with more talent and more upside than Elliott. (He will turn 32 before the start of next season's Coca-Cola Championship. Yes, that’s a dig at Fulham’s chances for Premiership survival.) Also, none of those dozen players have male pattern baldness already. The only positives I see in Fulham's going after Elliott, aside from a Rogaine endorsement, is that he’ll be free for Fulham and that the Crew will be free of his salary.

Wow. Simon Elliot. Fulham has Bocanegra and McBride already and now Simon Elliot.

Fulham obviously likes the MLS.

Well, Fulham are hard up to find some cheap players that can keep them in the prem. And the MLS does have some cheap players. I think the other main plus of rElliot woudl be that's he's a Kiwi so I'm assuming he wouldn't have work permit issues.

I'd hate to see him leave the league but Columbus needs to shake things up a bit. And I"m sure Sigi is looking to do that even if it means letting loose someone that used to play for him. Then again, Sigi was at the healm when LA traded Ellliot to the Crew.

Can you believe that Simon Elliot has started every match since he got to Fulham a few weeks ago. And he has looked decent. Plus he has been taking their free kicks and corner kicks. Who knew?!?!?!?!

Who knew what? How bad Fulham really is? I always considered Simon an above average MLS player. The fact that he is starting at Fulham and not looking horrible is shocking to me. Either he is better than I gave him credit for or the bottom dwellers in the EPL aren't any better than the top MLS teams. I am starting to believe that the latter is true.

Good point. But I wouldn't say that in terms of team. Elliot was class. But we're talking about class being able to make it, not just anyone from the MLS. Not every team had a CM on their team like Elliot. Armas was linked with Citeh after WC02 but didn't make the move ( 🙁 ). I think Mulrooney may be good enough. Maybe Pablo if he wasn't made of glass. But what other CMs in the league could pull off that move? I think that's where the gap lies in between the two leagues. I'm not sure many MLS teams would fare well in the fizzy pop, let alone survive in the prem. And I don't say that cuz I think the prem is infallible. It's a quality league but too often it's games turn into a fancy game of ping pong.

It's good to see him getting playing time over there. I'm still a bit suprised he didn't end up being part of Sigi's revamping of the Crew. Maybe he'll be back in another year or two.
