Is soccer boring?

Got this out of the Edmonton Sun today:

Steven Wells in The Guardian of London, trying to figure out why North Americans think soccer is dull, writes: "And yet, every week throughout the summer, hundreds of thousands of Americans dutifully troop into state-of-the-art stadiums to spend three hours (or longer) watching baseball - a sport so glacially tedious that it makes even the dullest MLS soccer game look like Topless Humans vs. Gorillas No-Rules Roller Derby on Crystal Meth.

🙂

He has a point... I can only sit through a baseball game if I know somebody playing in it. Otherwise it's mostly just spitting and scratching from what I can tell.

Actually, for a lot of people, going to a sporting event or watching one on TV becomes a social event. So the social atmosphere surrounding the sporting event supercedes the actual action that's taking place. Baseball is such an American tradition that people go for the "experience" more than the game itself sometimes. Soccer doesn't have that tradition in the US of dads taking their sons out to the ballpark, buying hotdogs, etc. Soccer lovers usually go for the game. Hopefully it'll catch on and develop a tradition of its own.

Sometimes soccer is boring. But sometimes ice hockey is boring...and Amercian football...and basketball, etc.

I think the difference is in understanding. A lot of Americans didn't grow up playing soccer, so they don't appreciate and understand it. They did grow up playing baseball, so they know all the finer points to the game.

Hopefully this is changing, though, with all the kids playing soccer nowadays. Hopefully they will grow up as soccer fans and support their local pro teams.

Baseball is way boring. I enjoy going to Stingers games, but yeah, it's to relax, get some peanuts or a hot dog, and just kind of hang out. I go to soccer because I love the game.
