Yet Another Road Loss for RSL.

Wednesday night saw another display in futility by RSL away from home. The losing streak away from Rice Eccles continues as RSL showed again they are a much better team at home than on the road. New England showed why they have been one of the premier teams in MLS with a fairly dominating display in Gillette Stadium.

RSL once again gave up an early goal to continue a disturbing trend of falling behind early. Jay Heaps looked like the all-star as he contributed to the Rev’s first three goals. The first came on a cross into the box as Clint Marshall nodded home the cross as he ran over Rusty Pierce in the 12th minute. (Can I get a foul call here?) The second came four minutes later as Heaps nodded a corner to Taylor Twellman who finished to put the Revs up 2 – 0.

RSL was able to get back into the game in the 31st minute as Jason Kreis rocketed in another free kick goal. This makes 99 career goals for Kreis, making 100 a near inevitability to come at home with two home games waiting. Going to the half down only one goal gave fans hope that a road result would be possible.

Play in the second half was somewhat promising, but in the last fifteen minutes the wheels completely fell off for RSL. First a corner comes into the head of the “all-star” Jay Heaps and Brian Dunseth played it into the corner of the goal past a stunned DJ Countess. That spelled the end for RSL for the game, but the capper came off a brain fart by DJ Countess. Countess badly played a ball to the wing right to Khano Smith who quickly beat Countess at the near post in the 90th minute.

All in all, this was a discouraging result for RSL. The first and last fifteen minutes were some of RSL’s worst play for the entire season. Once again RSL played well in spots, but the middle hour of the match was not enough to earn a result.
