This has been in the works for awhile, and is part of AEG's strategy to pull back their MLS commitment to their three primary teams--Fire, Galaxy, and Metro.

I hope for the sake of DC fans that the new group rethinks trying to build a stadium within the District. Centrally located, yes, but check with the Nationals about how well their stadium is coming.

I would imagine most of their fan base would be in northern Virginia anywy.

You'd be surprised--it's well split between Maryland and NoVa, with some from DC too. The whole region is a soccer hotbed, from the Tidewater and Richmond to Baltimore.

My kids played in leagues there, and the top level travel leagues cover both the Virginia and Maryland sides of the Potomac.

So the point is they would have to choose which side of the beltway to build. We lived in Prince William and Stafford counties in Virginia for a combined five years, so I wish I could recommend the Virginia side, but I think the best bet is Maryland. Too many reasons to detail in this post, but the NoVa soccer types will go wherever they build--although I'd stay well south of Baltimore.

I actually am not a DCU fan at all--I've never liked the team. But they deserve better than they've got now with RFK, and I hope they can get a deal done now that the ownership transfer is complete.

Someday hopefully all MLS teams will be owned, individually, by weathly pro-soccer minded people.
Then we will see even more development of players and stadiums.

That is owner movement in the right direction.
