First of all, I used to completely fight to the death in favor of Mac. Now that I'm not in school and I'm paying for my own computer, I switched so fast you wouldn't believe it. And I won't go back.

I was big into desktop publishing and the PC is just as easy to use as Mac. The software is the same with a different look and feel. No big deal at all to do it on the PC.

If you're doing video, etc. you'll want lots of power. The cheapest way to get lots of power is with a PC. You can get a little power and a slight usability advantage w/ Mac or join the rest of the world and get a lot more power with PC.

Can we say duh yet? 😉

Ha ha.. I know there are plenty that disagree with me, so sorry!

Can I use that too? Seems to fit my mood today

The conversion to Linux was a bit bumpy (that was 4 years ago though) because not all of the apps I wanted were around, but I am actually quite pleased with my current setup.
It wasn't so much getting used to a new operating system as it was trying to use what I wanted to use. Instead of taking minutes to allow my machine to use my scanner, digital camera, thumb drive, etc., it took hours, and sometimes days to get everything configured. :P

I currently still have it installed as dual boot on my home PC with a Windows install (that was no easy task, either!), but I rarely use it anymore. Too bad too, as I partitioned 80% of my HDD to be compatible with the Linux OS.

I used to hate macs until they put a G3 on my desk. Now I have a G4 emac with OSX and I like it even more. I will sometimes go to school to play on the net on my mac because I like it better then my pc at home. I will always have a pc just for games.

If you know how to build them, you can get the parts your want and you save money too. Find someone that knows how to build one and get the parts to build one. I have bought parts at EBC and I've been okay. I know some people have had a bad experience there. PC Club is good from what I hear, but they're a little more than EBC. I didn't read all the posts, but what are you using it for? If you are going to be playing games like Doom 3, Half Life 2, Counter Strike Source, and FarCry, you need to get something it a fast processor, a lot of RAM, and a kick-butt graphics card. IMHO.
Instead of building a computer, or having someone else build one for you, may I recommend Totally Awesome Computers? I used to always build computers for myself and others in my family, and to be honest, I can't compete with what they have to offer - especially now that they have their used computer section. They use high quality components, get OEM discounts on OS and software, and provide life-time support, all for very reasonable prices. The only way I think you could get a better deal is if you didn't car about support and don't mind getting pirated copies of software.

Sorry to beat a dead horse. I guess I should just stop, but I guess the Mac vs. PC holy war drives me on.

I argue that the usability advantage isn't slight. Not having to worry about a litany of viruses and spyware (probably the biggest frustration in computing today) is worth a bit of extra money when I buy. I won't say that Mac will never have a virus or spyware problem, but to me their OS seems much better equipped to handle the problem. My laptop recently died and I am willing to be w/out a bit longer so I can save up and buy a Mac laptop. I think the quality advantage is worth the price.

I guess it is a personal preference, but I will argue to the death that Mac is worth the money.

You know, I was talking to a co-worker about this thread when a Totally Awesome computer commercial came on. We quickly reached for the dial to turn it off and I commented to my friend tht his commercials alone are enough to make me want to consider Macs! 🙂

How about a little fun? You Mac fanatics find the best deal you can on a new Mac... lowest price, most functionality.

Then when you've done that, we'll find a comparable PC and see what it costs.

Deal?

edit: Not that cost is the only factor, but this seems like a fun thing to compare. I'm being open minded.

Okay, I will bit since I seem to be the Mac fan around. This won't be much of a contest as Macs having only a single hardware supplier that subsidizes software development w/ hardware you should be able to beat it.

Try the $1,300 iMac here.

Try the $2,000 Power Mac here

I am interested to see the results. Since photo and video editting are important I think that we should include that in the price. I will agree that Picasa is as good as iPhoto. I think that the cost of video editting software equivalent to iDVD/iMovie should be included in the cost though.
