Observations by The Czar

Fans + Watson

When I was in junior high school, my peers would sometimes exhibit reckless abandon and proclaim their everlasting love to some schoolmate. This was usually done by scrawling a simple mathematical equation on a locker, a notebook, or the bottom of a desk (though it required some navigation through pieces of gum cemented to the desk). I wrote “Czar + Mary,” but unfortunately Mary wrote “Mary + Brad.”

The point is, if we still expressed our love affairs this way, it would read “Fans + Watson.” Since the first time we saw the rookie take the field, we were enamored with his exciting style of play. Watson inspired the comeback in RSL’s win over Chilean side Universidad Catolica. He ran down a ball against Los Angeles that any other player in the league would have given up on.

…Oh yeah, and he broke the scoreless streak.

So I’m going to let you in on a secret: I heard from Jordan Cila, who heard from Cleatus, who saw Senad Halilovic (rumor has it he is still wandering around Salt Lake City), who is friends with Spence Checketts, who found out from Tiger… that Jamie Watson’s locker says “Watson + Fans.”

As the fans love Watson, he loves the fans. He was at the Loyalist preseason get-together. He threw his jersey into the crowd a while back, and after games he always salutes the Loyalists, the Cavaliers, the Jesters, and all those other soccer-crazed souls in the North-East corner.

To quote Casablanca, I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship.

GOAL!!!!!!

Jamie Watson finds the back of the net to end the cursed scoring drought. It was his first of the year on Andy Williams’ first assist.

ASSIST

A very positive statistic for RSL, lost in the shuffle was that Landon Donovan was held to 0 shots on the evening.

OWN-GOAL

Real Salt Lake owns the longest scoreless streak in MLS history. But they are still facing another drought: Real Salt Lake has not scored a goal yet in the north end… a streak of 360 minutes, if I’ve done my math correctly.

And just a random comment. Yes, he's still here. He actually had a game tonight.

He plays for a local Bosnian team and he played against another Bosnian team. I think it's Bosnia United or Bosnia USA or something like that.

Kind of sad that he's playing down in the lower leagues when he had a shot in the MLS.

I guess that is what happens when you suck. So I guess he was just looking for an excuse to move over here?

Was he really that bad? I never really got a chance to see him play. I was going to go to the game tonight and then it started to rain...and frankly the venue scared me. :p
