Sparse Crowd?

Anyone see this article on ESPN's soccernet? They described the crowd as "sparse". I don't think 15,000+ fans is sparse for a MLS game. Especially when other teams can't even draw 10,000 fans to their home games.

Okay, let me play linguist for a second...

It depends on the usage of "sparse". Sparse can mean "not dense" or "at a distance". So a crowd of 15,000 in a venue designed for 50,000 could legitimately be called "sparse".

But I don't think most people read it that way, and it was poor word choice.

If last night's crowd was sparse then the crowds for Dallas, Chicago, New England, Colorado, Columbus and San Jose must be classified as nonexistant.

I can only say that they are so used to seeing us having 20k that 15k to them looks sparse. But what do you expect from ESPN?

I wonder if they were trying to compare it to our usual weekend crowds.

I like that they talked about the crowd mocking the milestone. I was a little confused for a second when the streamers flew, it didn't take long for me to figure out why though. 🙂

Does that make us famous, or infamous?

I haven't seen the article, and am not sure about the context/author/audience. From what I understand, though, ESPN's soccernet is a global publication, not meant just for MLS fans. Compare MLS attendance to European matches. Other than the occasional WCQ, you never see 50,000+ fans in an MLS match. This article could be geared towards the global audience, or the author might have little experience with MLS matches and does not understand that 15,000 fans on a weeknight in the US is a HUGE accomplishment.

Our current success in ticket sales does make me wonder, if the team improves and is able to consistently put an exciting product on the field - thus increasing fan support - is a new 20,000 capacity stadium going to be big enough? Maybe 25,000 or 30,000? Are they going to design a stadium that can be easily expanded if necessary?

I think that it is not that uncommon for first year teams to have pretty high attendance. We may see a slight drop-off before we see a rise again.
