700 AM & RSL

I was listening to the Matt Thomas show, while driving to the hospital to visit my wife, and someone sent him an email saying something to the effect that people that hate RSL shouldn't call and talk bad about them because MLS will open up the gateway to other pro teams. Matt Thomas said he disagreed because even if the talk is negative it would get people interested in RSL. He said that it's been weeks since he's discussed RSL and he knows full well that RSL has a match tonight and he hasn't discussed it because he knows that it's not what his listeners want to talk about. However, later on, Chris Tunis had Clint Mathis on as a guest.

I think we, as Loyalists, need to be calling our local radio programs every day and talking about RSL. We're all here on this board doing it, so we can do it on the radio. I've done it a couple of time and it scares the heck out of me, but I do it because I care about this team. I've never called up about the Jazz and I love the Jazz too. RSL needs our support. There are some people out there that just need to give it a few chances and it will grow. I know that RSL isn't doing themselves a favor right now with the scoreless draught, but that will end. RSL will start winning again and the fair-weather fans will come back.

I, for one, am not a fair-weather fan. I'm going to a game in a rain storm tonight to support RSL. That's how much RSL means to me. My wife is in the hospital with our newborn baby, I'm going to an RSL game. I've been at the hospital twice today to compensate for my not being able to visit during the RSL game. I'm not trying to blow my own horn. I just know that some people don't take this as serious as others and, yes it's just a game.

There are a lot of reasons we should support RSL. Some of those reasons are economic ones. That's not why I support RSL though. I support them because, even if they lose, it's great entertainment. People will find this out but if we don't support our team they could move to another city. I don't want to see this happen. We need RSL and RSL needs us. LETS CALL OUR LOCAL SPORTS TALK SHOWS AND GET THEM TALKING ABOUT RSL ALL THE TIME. It's not Jazz season, we need to be talking RSL. Come on Loyalists, this is your rally call!

The probelm is that Mr. Thomas had made himself a prophet. If you avoid talking soccer... the soccer fans go where they get soccer talk. So he has made it true that his listeners don't want to talk soccer by not talking soccer. What we need to do is let him know that his ratings would be better if he did talk soccer.

I agree... it is good to support 1280 because they talk soccer, but we need to get the other stations talking soccer as well.

Exactly my point. It's funny when I run into people in this valley that still don't know we have a professional soccer team. In fact, I've run into two Brazilians in the same week that didn't even know that we have a professional soccer team. I know that Matt Thomas is willing to talk RSL. I've called him and got him to talk RSL before. In fact, the one thing I mentioned turned into an hour of soccer talk.

I mainly listen to 700 for Bill Riley. As most of you know, he does the TV games for KSL and Fox. Bill talks RSL quite a bit. If each Loyalist just took it upon his/herself to call one sports radio station or write one letter to the editor a week about RSL I think this would make a big difference.

People in our community need to know that there is a MLS team in SLC and those that know it, and don't support it, need to know that its fans are passionate and soccer isn't going away. It's here to stay for good.

Wouldn't it be awesome if the local radio and TV stations gave as much coverage to RSL as they do to the Jazz or BYU? By letting these stations know that this is what we want to talk about, they will give RSL more coverage.

If anyone disagrees with my opinion, let me know, but I think we are missionaries (I couldn't think of a better term) for RSL and MLS. I'm passionate about it. I know there are others on this board that are too. Let's get our voice heard.
