RES is a poor venue, it is the Loyalists, etc. that make it good.

I have to admit Monsieur Stucki is right. Without the Loyalists RES would be a huge empty cavern of former Jazz fans who need "MAKE SOME NOISE (do we have a chunder bucket emoticon by the way?)" in order to get them to even grunt in the right direction.

PS I love the Jazz and I'm a fan and I yell at the games even when:
*the Jazz Dancers aren't on the floor
*the Bear isn't giving away t-shirts
*the "Make some noise (see a chunder emoticon here again
please)" isn't up and running.
*the Jazz are actually winning the game.

Not true. Do you honestly believe that when the players and coaches said that the RSL fans where some of the most knowledgeable and noisy fans they've played in front of that they were just talking about the Loyalists?

It's true that most of the stadium doesn't chant the entire time but from where I sit in the North end, everyone seems to cheer as dictated by the game. Sure, they make noise on demand as well but they also follow the game and are loud. In fact, from the NW corner the Loyalists are barely audible for most of the game except for the drums. More people would likely join in but the chants are not really clear enough to decifer the words.

Good points. I come from the background of chants/cheers being the best way to support the team, even during the less exciting parts. Without the Loyalists the atmosphere still wouldn't be like a Tennis Match, for which I am grateful, but I would sorely miss the constant chanting and cheering.

Absolutely. I think our overall crowd atmosphere is excellent by MLS standards. However, there is still much work to be done to reach the type of atmosphere seen in Europe and the other Americas. It will take time to educate the other fans because being a fan at a soccer game is a little different than many other popular sports in the US.

It's different even from less popular sports, heh.

Most of the sporting events I attended when I was growing up were gymnastics meets, which are dead silent during the competition. I think that's where I picked up the sitting around and mumbling to myself habit.

When I went to England and Holland, people were appalled by me. :D
